Nonprofit Cost-Effectively Eliminates Barriers to Employee Preventive Care Services

Challenge

The dramatic decrease in annual wellness visit completions was particularly concerning for this employer. Due to the nature of the organization’s work, many team members spent most of their time outside, putting them at risk for skin cancer.

With help from a Hylant health strategist, the organization set about understanding what was driving the behavior and designing a plan to keep its workforce healthy.

Solution

Based on an employee survey designed in partnership with Hylant, the nonprofit learned that nearly a quarter of its employees didn’t have a primary care physician. Further, the potential cost of a doctor’s appointment and time missed on the job were barriers for these hourly workers.

Together, Hylant and the organization formulated a creative strategy to address the issues. The nonprofit hosted two health fairs and used carrier wellness funds to make preventive care services available on-site at no cost to team members. One hundred forty-six employees chose to participate. Those without a primary care provider were referred to one at the event, and that provider was on-site.

The organization also invited SkinIO to their fall health fair. The company provided free, potentially life-saving skin cancer screenings for 40 team members. Of those screened, 90% had not seen a dermatologist in over two years, and 58% had never been to a dermatologist. Three employees were flagged for urgent follow-up and referred to a local dermatologist.
