Global Manufacturer Reduces Heart Health Incidents Among Employee Population
Hylant helped this caring employer find the best way to help its 1,200-person workforce manage serious health issues and evaluate program effectiveness for ongoing decision-making.
Challenge
A global manufacturer was concerned by what its claim data revealed about its employee population: increased incidences and costs related to heart issues. The employer engaged Hylant to understand how it could best support its employees.
Solution
Hylant helped this client find possible solutions to address the alarming health trend. Ultimately, the company implemented an app that allowed users to monitor their blood pressure, track their heart health, share data with their doctor and receive real-time tips for improving their health. The app was first offered to those who self-identified as having high blood pressure and volunteered for the program.
Two years after the plan's implementation, the manufacturer wanted to understand the program’s effect in terms of people and dollars. Should they expand the program to include employees taking cholesterol medication, for example, which would increase the program size by 50%? The employer’s primary concern was its people, but like all companies, it needed to manage its budget effectively.
Hylant’s analysis revealed the following:
- Program participants had fewer heart attacks and less heart failure than non-participants, who experienced three times the rate of such events.
- Heart-related claim costs rose significantly less for plan participants compared with non-participants.
- Program participation remained steady, and those enrolled in the program also had a higher rate of staying with the employer.
