A Summer at Hylant: Through the Eyes of an Intern

October 6, 2021

Hylant offers internships for college students that allow them to explore a career path in the insurance industry and gain experience in a professional environment. While many internships provide students work experience, Hylant interns experience a truly immersive, educational internship.

Here’s a glimpse into what an internship can look like for you.

Onboarding

Walking in the doors at Hylant on the first day can be full of excitement and nerves. Luckily, you are walking into a group of people who are excited for you to be there.

The first few days lay the foundation for the knowledge and programs you will use throughout the summer. A mentor is there to guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have. You get a glimpse into the projects and teams you will work on. Even the leaders of the company take the time to get to know you and make you feel welcome. As you move past the first week, you know that the summer ahead will grow and shape you into a professional.

Getting Started

Each intern’s role is unique to what they want to learn and do. While all Hylant interns get together for meet & greets with Hylant leaders, professional development video meetings, and fun summer events, their summer experiences each can look vastly different.

Hylant interns quickly learn that an internship at Hylant gives you real responsibility and the ability to make an impact in your department early on. Each day can look completely different than the last and you have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects that interest you. Though each day can be different, a structure is established to ensure each intern has goals and understands their roles within their department.

Gaining Confidence

As the summer progresses, your skills and knowledge will too. As you start to further understand Hylant and your department, it will be easier to contribute to more challenging projects with confidence. As you continue to meet goals and see the difference your work makes, you can start to understand the value you bring to Hylant. There’s a team behind you to support you and give you feedback to push you to become the best version of yourself.

Networking

Throughout your internship, all interns are invited to meet with members of Hylant’s leadership team. It’s inspiring and encouraging to hear from industry thought leaders about their journeys, professional tips, and their vision for the future of Hylant.

Some of the people you have talked to or look forward to getting to know through these include Hylant’s CEO Bubba Berenzweig, CTO Deborah Bubp, President Bill Pridgeon, Employee Benefits Leader Lisa Hawker, and the whole talent team. During each call you’ve had, the Hylant leader has asked for feedback from you and shown an effort to get to know you.

Scholarship Opportunity

Each year, the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers (CIAB) awards scholarships to college students across the country who they believe have the potential to excel as leaders and contributors in the commercial insurance business sector. Hylant interns have been selected as recipients of this award for the past four years. Four of the 21 Summer 2021 Hylant interns were recently selected for this prestigious $5,000 scholarship this year. Both Hylant and the CIAB know that the future of the insurance industry depends on the attraction and development of young professionals and work to show that to you.

End of Summer

As your summer internship comes to an end, you are able to walk away with an experience that you’re proud of and professional relationships that last. Many Hylant interns make plans to continue the work they’ve done throughout the fall semester. Hylant interns have a tendency to stick around for sometimes years after they’ve completed their internships accepting full time offers post-graduation.

Regardless of where their paths lead them, interns leave knowing that they now have the experience, skillset and confidence to succeed in their future.
