About the Artist
Ellen Sherman is a visual artist living and working in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After graduating from Michigan State University in 2008 with a BFA in Studio Art, she moved to Miami, Florida, where she worked as a lead artist and designer in the mobile gaming industry. After a few years of working on many award-winning titles, she left her position in 2011 to focus on her art full-time. In 2017, she and her husband moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she has since set up her studio and small gallery space. When not painting, Sherman can be found hiking with her dog, moving rocks around her garden or tucked away reading art books. Her work is in collections in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Greece, Israel and the Netherlands.
About the Art
Sherman’s pieces in Birmingham, Michigan, speak to the intersection of vibrant color and dynamic, organic forms. Using thinned acrylic paint (echoing watercolor), Sherman worked in sweeping strokes and then gently guided the pooling paint around the canvas until the forms appeared. The process is fast and slow, with the initial pouring lasting only a few seconds and the guiding/drying of the paint lasting hours and up to several days. In her work, Sherman strives to strike the right balance between entropy and discipline, hard and soft, and fast and slow.
