What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program administered by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. You may qualify for Medicare if you are age 65 or older, are under age 65 and have certain disabilities, or if you have certain health conditions such as kidney failure or end-stage renal disease. Hylant is here to help you understand Medicare, and our licensed specialists can assist you in selecting the best plans to fit your budget and healthcare needs.

The Four Parts of Medicare and Their Costs

  • Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.
  • Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

What are the costs of Medicare Part A: Typically, Medicare Part A has no monthly premium if you have worked 40 quarters or 10 years. If not, there could be a cost.

  • Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and some home health care.
  • Requires a monthly premium.

What are the costs of Medicare Part B?: The federal government determines the monthly premium, and premiums may be higher for those with higher adjusted gross income.

  • Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
  • Includes Part A and Part B coverage, often with additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drugs.
  • May have provider networks and different cost structures.

What are the costs of Medicare Part C?: Medical costs (e.g., premiums and deductibles) will vary by insurance companies, plan type (i.e., HMO, PPO, etc.) and other factors.

  • Helps cover the cost of medications.
  • Offered through private plans approved by Medicare.
  • Requires a separate premium.

What are the costs of Medicare Part D?: Medical costs (e.g., premiums and deductibles) will vary and are set by the insurance companies that offer prescription coverage.

Common Mistakes Made with Medicare

  • Not understanding the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage
  • When to enroll while still working after age 65 and covered under an employer group plan.
  • The meaning or significance of “creditable coverage” for Medicare Part D (prescription coverage)
  • Pharmacy formularies for Part D prescriptions
  • The various plan types (HMO, HMO-POS, PPO) and how the provider networks (doctors, hospitals, pharmacies) reduce out-of-pocket costs
  • Total cost of care (premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance) and maximum costs
  • If an individual is on Original Medicare, when to enroll in a Medigap/Medicare Supplement policy
  • The “extra” help that may be available for people who need it
  • The importance of reviewing your Medicare choice and options on a regular basis
  • How a Social Security election affects your enrollment in Medicare – especially important for those contributing to their HSA

Hylant as a Resource for You

1. Unbiased Guidance

  • Our agents work with multiple insurance companies, not just one.
  • They aim to find the best plan for your needs, not push a specific provider.
  • Their loyalty is to you, not the insurance companies.

2. Simplified Decision-Making

  • Medicare has many parts (A, B, C, D) and plan types (Advantage, Medigap, Prescription Drug).
  • We help you compare plans side-by-side, explaining coverage, costs, and benefits clearly.
  • Our agents can save you hours of research and help you avoid costly mistakes.

3. No Extra Cost to You

  • Brokers are typically paid by the insurance companies.
  • You don’t pay for their services, and their compensation doesn’t affect your premiums.
  • Good brokers are not incentivized to push one plan over another.

4. Ongoing Support

  • Hylant offers year-round help, not just during enrollment.
  • We check in to make sure your plan still fits your needs and help you switch if necessary.

5. Personalized Recommendations

  • Our agents take the time to understand your health needs, budget, and preferences.
  • They tailor their advice to your situation, which is especially helpful if you have chronic conditions or specific medication needs
