Robert E. Hylant, Jr. Remembered for a Life of Resilience, Leadership, and Generosity

Toledo, OH September 18, 2025 — Robert E. Hylant, Jr., known affectionately as “Bob,” passed away unexpectedly on July 20, 2025, at Gulf Coast Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida. He was 78.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Bob was the eldest of nine children and a proud graduate of the University of Toledo. Over the course of his life, Bob built a legacy rooted in perseverance, personal transformation, and community impact. After early work in the construction industry, Bob found his calling in the insurance sector, eventually joining Hylant, the family business, where he made lasting contributions.
A pivotal moment in Bob’s life came in 1983 when he overcame alcoholism—a journey that defined his character and inspired countless others. For more than four decades, Bob exemplified recovery, resilience, and grace, becoming a mentor and role model to many.
Following his retirement, Bob and his wife Trudy relocated to Pine Island, Florida, where he remained active in the local community. Known for his warmth and storytelling, Bob worked at Pine Island Bait & Tackle, becoming a beloved figure among locals and visitors alike.
Bob’s passions included fishing, golfing, and sharing stories—often with a thermos of coffee in hand and a boat full of friends. His encyclopedic knowledge earned him the nickname “Britannica Bob,” and his generosity and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his wife, Trudy; sons Rob (Wendy) and David (Clare); grandchildren Zoe, Emerson, CJ, and David; stepsons Mike (Kathy) and Von (Kristine) Acker; and numerous siblings, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jeanne Hylant, and his sister Polly Tracy.
A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 1-3 p.m., at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. A service will follow, at 3 p.m., in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Francis de Sales School Foundation in Toledo, supporting the Hylant Family Memorial Scholarship in honor of Bob’s enduring legacy of strength, faith, and family.
